The country is increasing Laos’ reach onto the world stage: the nationalities now access visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 49 countries, including destinations such as Indonesia, Nepal, and Egypt, among others. This surge has brought an outbound boom in travel, with more Laotians venturing out into the world to experience different cultures, from the vivid streets of Tokyo to the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand. The growing interest in foreign travel demonstrates a demand for adventure and cultural exchange, which enriches Lao’s cultural fabric with new global perspectives. This, undoubtedly, is shifting Laos into a more connected and globally engaged nation.

Key to this trend has been the economic growth of Laos. With a GDP of nearly $15.84 billion as of early 2023, growing 19.3 percent over the past decade, opportunities to travel and experience the world are far more within reach for Laotians today. Economic development not only stimulates outbound tourism but also leads to closer business relations at the international level.
The growth is also supported by the development of a better transportation infrastructure in Laos. The process is about developing road and rail networks, of which the Laos-China Railway is part, and increasing improvements to port infrastructure along the Mekong River. These investments are consequentially making Laos a regional transport hub within Southeast Asia, driving regional trade and economic development.

National airlines, in particular Lao Airlines, have their own roles to play with regard to increasing connectivity to Laos. They connect major cities within the country and connect Laos to key destinations within the region of Southeast Asia, China, and beyond with service, thus facilitating tourism and trade. In this aspect, their role—bridging geographical barriers—is very important to popularize Laos as a tourist destination and integrate it into the global network of air transport to contribute towards its overall economic development.
