Hey, travelers! If you’re one of those who have been dreaming of strolling around the vibrant streets of Seoul or soaking in the beauty of South Korea for quite some time, then you might have hit a bit of a roadblock lately. So here’s what went down and how Thailand is really pulling us out of this bind.

Recently, Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, met with Cho Tae-yul of South Korea over travel curbs that made it hard for Thai nationals to visit. The discussed issue was the K-ETA system of Korea Electronic Travel Authorization that allows one to travel but does not guarantee entry upon arrival. Imagine going all the way to South Korea just to get turned away at the airport. Not fun, right?
Such a strict policy frustrates many, and there is even a social media movement that encourages Thai tourists to consider other destinations. No wonder the number of Thai visitors to South Korea dropped by 21 percent in the first few months of 2024 compared to last year.
South Korea has increased entry checks as part of efforts to reduce illegal immigration and unauthorized employment. Thai nationals are frequently targeted. Thailand complained at a consular meeting in Seoul earlier this year, to which South Korea replied that it understood the need for tough measures because there was a surge of undocumented Thai residents.
But all is not yet lost! South Korea is keen to cooperate for a better way forward. The diplomatic talks are on, and both sides are committed to resolving these travel hiccups.
Although things are quite tricky just now, it is quite evident that both countries are working hard to smooth things over. Keeping our fingers crossed to see some changes soon for the better in order to make Thai travelers experience more of what South Korea has in store! ✈️
